چکیده

This paper describes an application of recently developed qualitative reasoning techniques to complex, socio{economic allocation problems. We explain why we believe traditional optimization methods are inappropriate and how qualitative reasoning could overcome some of these shortcomings. A case study is presented where an authority is expected to devise a policy that satis es certain constraints. We describe how sets of rules of thumb implementing such a policy can be analyzed and validated by the decision maker using a program which automatically builds and simulates qualitative models of the underlying dynamical system. Such a program constructs and simulates models from incomplete descriptions of initial states and functional relationships between variables. We show that it nevertheless gives su cient information to the decision maker.

Quantitative Models from Qualitative Data: Case Studies in Agent-Based Socio-political Modeling

Many socio-economic policy, planning and assessment questions arise because not enough is known about their subjects. While inaccessibility and lack of hard data are the very challenges that may make a computer model invaluable, they are also reasons why many modeling and simulation applications are never undertaken. The authors have found that qualitative agent-based models that are appropriat...

Cognitive mapping concept of resource management for the viability of local communities

The local community is a complex socio-economic system, and its ability to function for an indefinitely long period of time (viability) is not investigated sufficiently today. The purpose of the research was, using the cognitive mapping, propose to the local community management developing their own management strategies to ensure its viability. Considering the weakly structured subject area of...

Three-dimensional modeling of transport phenomena in a planar anode-supported solid oxide fuel cell

In this article three dimensional modeling of a planar solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) was investigated. The main objective was to attain the optimized cell operation. SOFC operation simulation involves a large number of parameters,   complicated equations, (mostly partial differential equations), and a sophisticated simulation technique; hence, a finite element method (FEM) multiphysics approach ...

Quantitative scenario-based simulation of global business models for manufacturers

Manufacturers expanding their business globally need to understand and analyze long-term trends of technology innovation relevant to their products as well as future socio-economic development of the target markets. Qualitative scenario modeling methods can evaluate opportunities and risks of their products in a specific market. To obtain quantitative evaluation results, however, just qualitati...
